(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Israeli activists have protested against gender segregation on buses transporting passengers in al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the surrounding areas.
Male and female Israeli protesters boarded a “mehadrin” bus together on Sunday evening in protest against gender segregation, which is mainly observed by ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews.
Mehadrin bus lines run in or between major Haredi population centers in al-Quds and nearby areas.
Protest organizers said the move also included similar actions on gender-separated bus lines in Beit Shemesh, Rehovot and Bnei Brak neighborhoods.
A number of Israeli Knesset (parliament) members including Rachel Adatto and Shlomo Molla from Kadima Party and Zahava Gal-On from Meretz had previously announced plans to join the protest.
Over the past few years, secular Israelis and ultra-Orthodox Jews have had disputes over strict interpretation of religious laws.
Frequent clashes have also taken place mainly in Beit Shemesh in recent years between ultra-Orthodox Jews and Israeli authorities that are against segregation of men and women in public places.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews also say according to their beliefs the way children in girls' schools dress is “immodest.”
